The United States is the first country to plant a flag on the lunar soil. On July 20th 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong and his fellow crew members planted the US flag on the surface of the Moon. This historic moment marked the beginning of the Apollo programme, which lasted for eleven years.

The mission marks the first time that a country has planted a flag on the lunar surface. In 1971, NASA astronauts planted a US flag on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission. However, it wasn’t until 1976 that another country joined the club. During the Soviet Union’s Luna 24 mission, cosmonauts planted a red star flag on the moon.
